Welcome to Boston & USA

Boston’s great, and so is the US. We simply love it here. It’s convenient, it kind of has the best from everywhere. It successfully merged Burger with Fajitas with Thai Food. Wouldn’t trade it for anything, plus, it’s always just a short trainride away from almost-abroad Chinatown and Li’l Italy. And probably from Li’l Vienna, someday. Until then, let’s focus on the true American kitchen, enjoy delicious Apple Pie and Meat Loaf.

Quick Cheese Dip

February 2, 2016

So  this is it, the dip I’ve dreamed of: Easy, quick and soooo delicious … a new weekday favorite. Poor lactose-intolerant people!   This cheese dip is basically a béchamel sauce with the addition of sharp cheddar. I used orange-colored sharp cheddar in this recipe, but feel free to experiment with any other cheese. Sharp ones are best but I’ve even tried this dip with mozzarella, when I ran out… continue reading »

The Fluffiest Pretzel Bites

February 1, 2016

As you may know, I am writing a cooking column about US food for an Austrian newspaper. Yes, Austrians are also allowed to do so ;-) I have been writing this column for almost two years now and the readers don’t seem to get tired so far – no, surprisingly they are getting more and more enthusiastic about American food. Yay! As next Sunday is time to watch Super Bowl… continue reading »

Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

December 20, 2015

When I saw these cookies for the first time, I knew immediately that I would have to make them. I noticed them on America’s Test Kitchen Instagram account and they looked sooo pretty, though simple to make. Two days later I could call a batch of these pretty babies mine. They taste gorgeous, with their rich chocolate flavor, almost Brownie-like, and their super moist center makes you reach for the next one in no time…. continue reading »

Apple Cider Caramels

November 15, 2015

These apple cider caramels are simply amazing! They are chewy and soft at the same time and boast intense apple flavor. I always sprinkle some coarse sea salt ontop – it pairs so well with the sweet caramel. Simply deeellllliiiiicccciioooouussss!!! You will find apple cider everywhere right now here in New England: at restaurants, farmers markets and of course at every supermarket. Btw, I am talking about soft apple cider… continue reading »

Homemade Ketchup

September 30, 2015

Tomato season is in its peak. Some of us are lucky and have a garden or some space to grow their own tomatoes. My parents for example. Lucky me to be in Austria right now to visit my parents and right in time to eat all their aromatic veggies. This summer was extremely hot in Austria and apparently tomatoes like this kind of climate. The harvest has never been better… continue reading »

Healthy Strawberry Smoothie

August 27, 2015

This flavor bursting, sugar-free, creamy and vegan strawberry smoothie is ready in a few seconds and only needs two ingredients. Wait … 3 ingredients if you count the ice as an actual ingredient.   I got crazy enthusiastic at the market again and bought some boxes of strawberries. As you may have noticed, strawberries spoil very quickly, so this smoothie is a good way to get rid of fruit in… continue reading »

5-Minute 4-Ingredient Frozen Yoghurt

June 25, 2015

This frozen yogurt is delicious, healthy and incredibly easy to make. You will need just four ingredients (frozen strawberries, yogurt, syrup and lemon/lime juice), throw them together in a blender or food processor and mix until creamy. This doesn’t even take 5 minutes, rather 2. Fresh strawberries can be used instead of frozen ones, however they must be frozen before processed. Btw, I used a small food processor. I found similar recipes for… continue reading »

Never Fail Walnut Granola

May 23, 2015

This is my easy go-to granola. It’s packed with nuts and is low in sugar and oil.   Being on “vacation” in Austria to visit my family while living in Boston means having lots of delicious Austrian food around me. So, a typical day usually starts with a coffee and some slices of a sweet, braided raisin loaf with unsalted butter and Mum’s homemade blackberry jam (of course … homemade,… continue reading »

Loaded Nachos

January 29, 2015

Some food is literally made to be eaten in front of the TV. I am usually not a fan of this habit (at least if I’m in company), but these loaded nachos are definitely one of these foods. It just feels wrong, sharing and eating, while sitting up straight on a chair. There may be only one exception, where nachos are good to eat while sitting on furniture, made of wood: in a bar,… continue reading »

Brioche Burger Buns

November 19, 2014

I started making burger buns myself a few years ago. I couldn’t find any good buns in the Austrian supermarkets, because they all tasted too sweet and artificial to my taste buds. Frankly, I bought some rolls at one of the many bakeries. The bakeries in Austria are awesome not to say ones of the best in the world. I really miss them here in Boston: brown bread with a… continue reading »

Portobello Burger on Homemade Brioche Buns

November 12, 2014

Who says BBQ is only fun during summer? Well, I definitely do not. I love grilling all year round – even during winter months. And apparently, I am not alone with this weird habit. According to the grill manufacturer Weber, more than half of American grill owners grill all year round. And before you condemn me for quoting a grill manufacturer, I think even if their numbers may be pushed a little,… continue reading »

Fluffy Buttermilk Pancakes

September 10, 2014

Yes, I know. You’ve heard and read it all: recipes for the world’s best pancakes ever, the super-super fluffy ones and the oh-my-gosh-I-can’t-live-without-them-any-more ones. And they all disappointed you, because they were okay but didn’t keep what they have promised. So let’s do it the other way round: I hereby promise you a recipe for normal, “fluffy buttermilk pancakes” only and you are the one to tell me (or post it here) that they… continue reading »
